Default Basic Questions: Stances & Items\Exp\Gold

What are stances? How do melee stances differ from spellcaster stances? Are you automatically in a stance when you're fighting?

How are items assigned between players? I noticed sometimes I would open a box or get a kill and the item was already assigned.

How is experience shared between multiple players when grouped? Are gold and experience "split" equally or do all players receive the full amount?

Thanks all. Also, I'd appreciate a link "Charles' (Ensign?) Treatise on Combat Math" I read about it in this forum here but can't find it to read.

Hi.

Stances are a class of buff that only affects the person using the stance. While in a stance, a player recieves all benefits and drawbacks of that stance - they are functionally similar to enchantments. The difference is that a player can only be in one stance at a time, period - you can't use both a Ranger and a Warrior stance, for example. Stances are next to impossible to remove, and several are incredibly useful so any character that has access to stances should seriously consider using one.

I want to say it's purely random amongst the team, and that evidence to the contrary is just noise. Well, to do the simple bits first - chest drops are randomly assigned. Period. It doesn't matter who opens the chest, anyone can get anything.

Monster drops also appear to be random. You can run off and solo a monster when another player is AFK, and they'll assign the drop to that other player. The only reason I'm not willing to just close the book on the debate is how experience is doled out.

Experience is shared equally between all characters who participated in a fight with a given opponent. This is a division - if soloing a monster would give you 100 XP, then killing that same monster with 3 participating party members would give you 25 XP.

The only tricky part is what counts as a participating party member. As I was playing a Monk quite a bit this past weekend I got a chance to experiment with this quite a bit, and here are the results.

A party member is considered to have participated in a kill, thereby getting a share of experience, if at least one of the following is true:

1) That character dealt damage to, or used a skill upon, the monster in question.

2) That character recieved damage from, or was the target of a skill from the monster in question.

3) That character uses a skill upon a party member who already meets the criteria for receiving experience.

The first two are fairly self explanitory. The third is the tricky one. Here are a couple of examples:

- During combat, your Monk casts a healing spell on a Warrior already engaged with the enemy. That Warrior is already participating in combat, so now you are too, and you will recieve experience.

- Before entering combat, you buff up your team's Warrior with Healing Seed. Powered by that defensive buff, that Warrior takes care of the enemy without further intervention from you. In this case, you did *not* cast a spell on a combat participant, and will not recieve any experience for enemies killed, even though the Warrior is under the effect of your enchantment.

- Your Necromancer is hanging out in the back, and casts Blood is Power on the team's Monk once he's low on energy. Assuming that the Monk is already participating in combat by healing the Warriors, your Necromancer is now participating in combat by helping the Monks, and will recieve experience. Rule #3 is recursive, you can create long buffing chains and everyone involved will recieve an equal share of experience.

Generally, as long as you're with the rest of the team and helping out, you'll get your share of experience. But if you're off doing your own thing, you will not. The only time this is problematic is when your team is steamrolling the opposition - in that case, oftentimes the Monks and other support characters will not cast a buff to link them to combat with a given enemy in time, and miss out on some experience.

Split equally. I'm not sure how fractions are rounded during XP splits, nor do I know what happens to odd gold pieces during gold division.

Not a problem. The link to the article in question is:

I hope you find it useful. Take care.

The odd gold piece seems to go to a random person. I've been in a group of two when 1 gold dropped. When we picked it up one of us ended up with it and the other with nothing (doesn't matter who picks it up).

Gold might be distributed in a round-robbin fashion, meaning that if i have 6 people in my group and 4 gold drops then player 1,2,3 and 4 will get 1 gp but the next time 3 gp drops then 5,6,1 get a gp and so on so forth. It may start this process randomly though or the first person to pick gold up begins the process. Not that this is of great consiquence so who really cares .
